Where does your boost gauge read?

I just spoke with my Peugeot mechanic about my boost pressure being low, he
said it was normal for it to be at half-way. I thought it was supposed to get
up to (or very close to) the first red mark. It used to go to the first red
mark when I had a leak in a hose and the car was fast. I didn't worry too much
about engine damage since my fuel mixture was at 2-3 volts. Where does the
needle on your gauge go?
