Early on ( early 1989 I think), Peugeot issued a TSB to all dealers to
seal with silicone the ECU's in '89 405 model cars for the very reason
you describe. This fix was really a stop gap measure, and not a good
solution. In the '91 model, they fashioned a plastic box which fully
encases the ECU. My ECU failed in '93-'94 (check engine light stayed
on...no noticeable decline in performance) due to flooding when my car
had 59k miles which was just beyond the warranty period. I fought Peugeot
NA when faced with the $1100 dealer replacement cost of an ECU but lost.
It took 4-5 months, but I finally found a used ECU for $275. I then
bought the '91 box and installed it in my car.
