Headlamps: Electric adjusters seize up on the back of the headlamps (How
do these work?, I didn't think they were electric!)
Oil Cap: If you find Yoghurt in the filler cap its not necessarily a
blown head gasket. MI16's suffer from condensation in the breather
hoses.
Gearbox: All boxes are notchy when cold, but OK when warm. 4x4's are
trouble if the transfer box packs in (=A32500).
Brakes: Early ABS vacuum pumps are unreliable and can leave you without
brakes. Ensure the ABS light on the dash flashes 3 times, then goes out
when the car is started.
Foglamps: Factory and after market don't last 5 minutes because they're
not sealed and corrode rapidly.
Spark Plugs: Plug leads become brittle and come off the plugs
Engine: Should last 150K if cared for. Avoid if any sign of heavy oil
consumption. Rubber pipe from the airbox to plennum chamber fills with
condensation, and can make tick-over lumpy.
Heater. If one bits fails you have to buy a complete replacement unit
(=A3400)
Electric's: 405 electric's are a nightmare. Check all the windows work,
instruments light up and central locking operates, especially on the
drivers door. This can cost much =A3=A3=A3 to fix.
Wheels: Paint flakes on standard alloys at a very early stage
Exhaust: Manifolds have a habit of cracking and silencers are often very
weak.
Sunroof: More dodgy electric's mean sunroofs jam-up, so keep them well
oiled and greased up.
Drivers seat: Frame prone to snapping and going all wobbly. Can be a
sign of high mileage.
Body Work: Front End prone to stone Chipping's. Check for accident
damage around door shuts and inner wings.
Obviously, this is a summary of the article in which they praise the
MI16 very highly, provided your prepared to spend some money on keeping
the car running.
