405 Brake Pad Wear Sensors/Engine oil

To All,

Recently the brake pad wear warning light has
started glowing on my '93 405 STI. It glowed
dimly at first, then started getting brighter,
but it still doesn't happen at every application
of the pedal. How does this system work, and
approximately how much more time/miles do I have
before pad replacement becomes necessary? BTW,
I assume it's just the front pads that are
monitored as (a) I changed the rear pads five
months ago when I bought the car and (b) there
are no wires coming from the rear pads.

Also, I have been using Castrol GTX Magnatec
10w/40 API SJ in the engine, and changing it
every 3000 miles. I don't think this oil is
available in the US yet, but in Great Britain
it's promoted as being the best protector yet,
since the oil clings to the metal parts of the
engine eliminating start-up wear. Has anyone
else any thoughts/experience of this? And am I
being over-cautious by changing this (synthetic)
oil so often? There is never any sludge/crud in
the oil when I drain it, and the engine neither
leaks nor uses any oil between services. My
driving, BTW is predominantly urban cycle, with
the occasional (once or twice a month) fast burn
on the motorway. Thoughts please...
