Brian,

A few months ago I went through a similar exercise and ended up
replacing the plugs, leads, fuel filter, fuel pump, coil, cap & rotor...
etc. I then gave up and gave it to a local garage...

... the garage then tracked it down to a partially broken 12v supply
lead to the idle speed control valve, forcing the valve to open/close at
inappropriate times. This valve also needed cleaning with some carb
cleaner.

The exercise was expensive, but I certainly learnt a lot about the car.

Hope this helps,

Alan.

Subject: 89 405 Mi16 - Starting, Idling, Hesitation Problem HELP!

I have an 89 405 Mi16 which has developed some sort of running problem.

Upon cold start, the engine would start on the 1st or 2nd try, but miss
and
such for 20 seconds or so, then surge to 2000rpm and fall back down to
1200.....idling "smooth" by what the tach said, but the exhaust note
told a
story of slight missing.

When you first pulled away, the car had no power, and for the first
100ft,
would hesitate and bog....almost like there was a lack of fuel. Then it
was
fine.

But over the past week or so......it would take 4 or 5 tries to
start....each time the car would "start" instantly, then die immediatly.
I
could speed this process up by priming the gas pedal. (yes..like in a
carburated car.)
And...when the car finally did start, and was idling terribly, a little
jab
on the gas pedal would clear it up for 5 seconds or so.

It is fairly smooth running at constant speed.....but when you abruptly
change throttle..like floor it or something....it will hesitate a
little.....almost like it is bogging down or something.

If I can at a light, and floor it from a stop...I get surging all the
way to
redline.....One of out 5 or 8 tries will the car feel like it has full
power, I will think the problem is solved, but to know avail.

To try and solve this problem, I have installed a new air filter, new
plugs,
new cap and rotor, new fuel filter, and run a bottle of Techron
through.....nothing has helped.

I was thinking of getting new spark plug wires.....as well..but that is
not
what I think this problem is.

This sounds fuel pumpish to me? Anyone else concur? Anything else? I
have looked through the archives looking for this problem...I have seen
someone cleaning out the emissions equipment, someone else fixing a
vacuum
leak. But I wouldnt think the vacuum leak would hurt anything at high
rpm.
This problem is all the way through the power band.

Thanks in advance!
