That is interesting that you should mention that, George...my family
has an Acura Legend, Integra, and a Honda Civic. All three have temp
gauges that operate exactly as you describe on the '89 Civic. In
fact, the Legend overheated once, and I did not even realize it for
probably a good 10 minutes of driving as I NEVER look at the temp
gauges in those cars, given their propensity to stay stuck in the
middle with little to no variation. I was extremely surprised to find
the Legend's gauge pegged to the red all of a sudden.
My 405's gauge certainly has a large degree of variation (probably
about 40 deg C) - although whenever I drive on the interstate,
regardless of ambient temp, speed, A/C or not, it is always just below
the half mark. OTOH, every Italian car I have ever owned (with the
exception of my Fiat 850s, oddly enough, which were well-known to
overheat quite often) required a careful eye at the temperature gauge,
regardless of how well maintained the cooling system was.

The constant movement of the temp gauge certainly makes me want to keep
looking at it. The gauge shows all the variations as the fans turn on,
traffic conditions, etc. The "normal" is set by the thermostat.
Remember, Peugeot sells 3 thermostats, cold, med,and hot, so I would say
put the one that makes you comfortable, and reduce the worry factor...
waiting to see if the gauge will go past that 3/4 point gives very
little time to react before its in the red.
I recall a 89 Civic that whether it was 40^, or 100^ and in traffic the
gauge never fluctuated. No matter what, it was always at 1/2. Curious I
looked in the manual and learned that it had a huge dead zone designed
in. I suppose that when ready to boil over the gauge would then "jump"
into the red zone. One thing it DID was create a feeling(false or not)of
security. On second thought it might as well been an "IDIOT LIGHT"!!!!
