505 overheating

hello!
i have a1986 505 gl wagon, xn6, whose electric fan doesnt seem to be
activating; when stuck in a traffic jam the temp gauge started to climb very
high - when i got out and checked the fan was not on - could this be a relay?
which relay is it and can anyone tell me how to test the relay?
