I've had one like that. Doesn't happen too often, and it's very easy
to diagnose, withhout going through the trouble of dial indicators,
etc. The cam lobes are clearly visible, when you turn over the
engine, and they tend to be deeply grooved / flat. When the hardened
surface has a flaw, the material tends to wear off rapidly.
Unfortunately, you'll have to pull the cylinder head to r & r the cam.
Do you need a [used] camshaft?
