Last summer i replaced the thermostat , since it was stuck halfway
open,
since then the guage has been steady at a little over 80 C.
My first thought was that the thermostat havd given up, so i got a new
one
(on warranty), but the overheating continued, today i put in an 83 C
thermostat instead of the old 88 C, but it still overheats.
My next guess is a clogged radiator ( i did use some leak sealing
stuff
last year, i should have known... however it sealed the leak) or
possibly
a blown head gasket.
I couldn't feel any pressure when i started the car cold and put my
hand
in place of the filler cap (and a finger in the little hole under it),
not even
if i revved the engine, so if it is the gasket, it isn't much...
If it is the radiator, i guess i could "flow test" it myself to get a
pretty good
picture of it's health, but how do i flush it? What do i use to
dissolve the
wondarweld stuff that i guess is plugging it? I've been thinking of
flushing
it with thinner or something, as long as it doesen't eat the plastic.
Oh, the fans seem to work ok, they come on and when the guage is at
about
90 C, and then stops before the guage goes down, which suggest the
coolant
isn't circulating properly, and put in a new thermostat-switch last
year.
So what do you think, head gasket, clogged radiator, something else?
Since this got to long anyway, here is a little tip, i read about
someone
having problems with bleeding the cooling system a few days ago:
The peugeot thermostat has a little opening, about 1 mm
in diameter, this hole is to let air pass it, so that you can bleed
the system.
the 83 C i put in isn't a peugeot thermostat and it didn't have the
hole, which
made it impossible to bleed the system via the screw on the thermostat
housing,
but if you disconnect the little hose to the left it can be bled
there.
