How deadly the stop leak is may be a function of the type/ brand you use.
I've had "Bars leak" liquid in my 84 TD wagon for 80,000 miles with no
overheating problem. I called the manufacturer before I put it in and
was told it will seal leaks of only a certain size, don't remember what
it is. The "plugging agent" will get smaller and smaller by buffeting
action as the coolant circulates. Bars leak did recommend a system flush
after more than three application.
One thing I did find was that it will hang up the coolant level sensor
and cause it to stop indicating. Just take the sensor out every 400
miles and soak it in water, shake it, squirt water into the openings etc
to free it up.
