1) with car off, battery shows only 10.3V charge
2) usually car won't start without battery booster
3) with car running ,charge measured at battery terminals is still at
10.3V
4) running car over 2500RPM for 1/2 hour does not help matters
The guy who a year ago sold me the battery took the above readings and
concluded it was the alternator. Went through hassle of locating
another alternator, testing it on a bench and installing it. Still the
above readings remained unchanged.
here are some more relevant facts:
4) dash battery light comes on briefly after car starts and goes off
after slight rev. does not reappear
5) connections at alternator are receiving current
All this leads me to believe that the battery has a dead cell which is
why it is unable to receive or give out a charge above 10.3. Does this
make sense?
One more question:
with car running will the reading at the battery terminal be in the
normal range (13-14 volts) even if the battery is damaged? or is getting
a normal reading contingent upon the state of the battery in the first
place?
thanks
