Many folks have had this happen, including myself.
It's not pretty.
Mine was about as nasty as you could get, because the tensioner siezed
and caused the belt to get its teeth sheared off by the crank pulley,
and the belt never broke, but did get greatly out of time while turning
intermittently during its last few rpms, bending all 16 valves, (unlike
a belt break, which would max out at 8 possible valves being bent)
bending 8 valve guides. No piston damage. Gasket cost not that bad,
around USD 70.00, intakes and exhaust gaskets pretty reasonable. Add in
the belt, USD 30.00, water pump, just because you're in there, probably
tensioners at around $50.00 each, for two, and around $30.00 each valve,
new valve seals, at $2.00 each, New exhaust gasket and bolt kit from
header to cat pipe around $35,
new studs for the head to header bolts, plus nuts, another $20, and new
valve cover gasket at around $30, probably a new power steering belt,
new air filter, and why not, a new alternator/a-c belt as well,
and labor at around ?????$. Flat rate from Ericsson (sp?) in Southern CT
was around $650 quoted, all parts included and labor to rebuild the
head, although mine was around $900 in parts alone (just for the head).
So, people are quoted around $1400 for fixing that problem and that is a
pretty good deal. If you are into just getting things working without
the fancy extras like PM items such as the water pump, then you can
skimp for $6-800 on this job. And you get what you pay for.
I'll send a picture of my bent set of valves sitting on their flat faces
soon, when my wife returns from Florida with her new digital camera.
Quite a laff to see the destruction this problem caused. Maybe I'll
share my grenaded 5-speed's guts pictures as well, if I get time to pull
it apart in the midst of a family move across town in the next few days.
That should be good.
On a side note, my Mi16 alternator has a noisy bearing on the inside
end, and it's a lifetime warranty unit from Pep Boys. I've had it for 11
months now, and the noise has been coming and going for around 3 months.
I decided to change it while I had the intake runners off for
tranmission transplantation, (look at one and you'll see why I chose to
do it while the intake was off) and low and behold, Pep Boys can no
longer get me one. They've offered to settle with me if I can find one
elsewhere, but I cannot find one reasonably-priced. I am leaning toward
a bearing job only. Am not sure what I'll find inside of it to get to
that end of the alternator. It still works, so maybe I should leave it
alone. But I hate the noise. When I got that alternator, it was a
replacement for one that only lasted a month before developing no
voltage limiting, and was charging my electrics to 18 volts! In both
instances, it was overnight shipped. Now, they cannot get their hands on
one.
