505 declutchable fan

According to the wiring diagram in my 83 505sti owners manual, the aux.
fan and the declutchable fan get powered at the same time by the thermo
on the radiator, so I would expect that both fans run or neither fan runs
according to the temp. Am I reading this right? Also my declutchable
fan always free wheels and never is engaged, I will take a look at the
solenoid and the gap as per the recent posts. I will say though that
the temp gauge is always in the middle and the aux fan cycling maintains
it there, but the aux fan is not original, it was replaced with one from
a newer unit possibly with greater speed/cooling capabilities.
