Need rec. on new ground lead location (405 8V)

Can anyone tell me where a good alternate source would be for the negative
ground at the engine? I'm replacing the negative cable on my battery and
I've heard that the original location isn't very good. I'm chasing the
slow starter gremlin.

Also, does anyone have anyone know whether the 405 employs a fusable link
from the alternator to the starter and battery? If so, what would I have
to do if I wanted to make my own replacement--i.e. rating of fuse??? The
other thing I wnat to do is temporarily hook up a ammeter that I got at
Schucks to test the charging voltage (it's so ugly I don't want to hook it
up permanently). It didn't have the instructions that were supposed to be
included with it. Maybe I could permanently hook it up under the hood.

Thanks in advance. The car is going to Whistler, BC and I don't want to
be stuck up there... no, really! :-) Atleast my skis are Y2K compliant!
