Diesel noise!

Ok, this is the biggest problem I've got besides #2 teenage daughter.
My 504TD wagon is very loud inside when doing 60mph and up and gets
more tolerable about 75-80. It is kind of a resonance (I think)
between the engine and exhaust system. The coolant temp needle will
vibrate at about 63, just like my 76 504D wagon did. Right now I have
no muffler, straight pipe all the way back. Exhaust noise back there
is OK. By the way I picked up .2 lbs of boost with the straight pipe
and you can feel that extra power. I initially had a walker muffler put
on at the very rear and exhaust noise was a bit quieter but the
resonance was still there. I suspect there has to be a certain muffler
in a certain location to cancell this noise. I put some light sound
proofing under the floormats and seemed to help a bit. I thought it
maybe was comming through my homemade tranny mount, but I disconected
it and let the tranny rest on a jack while I revved it to that
RPM--still loud. I love driving my car but this is very annoying.
Anybody know of a good soundproofing material? Any other suggestions?
Jerry
