Normally, add-on radio equipment should be grounded to the same grounding
point the other radio equipment is. Best, too, if they receive their +
power from the same point.
Connecting a radio's + and - directly to the battery puts it parallel
with the alternator, which creates the whine/static.
If playing with the grounddoesn't help. Radio Shack has a noise filters
($15-20) that will help eliminate the problem
