In the "desert" vein, I wish to recommend to all a book devoted to
exploration of the Sahara Desert and its inhabitants. This book is very
matter-of-fact about life and death and is NOT for the faint of heart. The
author tells many stories about survival and non-survival. Since the area
described is generally Algerian, there are many references to Peugeots, and
one can glean the reality of driving a vehicle upon which one's life
literally is dependant; stories of the wind-driven sand sweeping away all
evidence of the road surface, requiring navigation by compass and stars, with
flat tires, boiling radiators, shade-tree repairs of our cars, truly the
ships of the desert! The REAL place where our cars shine, like no other.
Oops, got carried away, sorry about that. The name of the book is "Sahara
Unveiled; A Journey Across the Desert", by William Langewiesche, Pantheon
Books, 1996.
