Voltage is only half the story. I had a dim ALT light during high electrical
loads (at night...), but still good volts to the battery. Took it to an
alternator rebuild shop that is used locally by most mechs, and dealers. They
checked it and said it was good. After telling them that I was getting a dim
light, they disassembled it and found the brushes worn. They told me that
voltage could be good under little or no load but the brushes couldn't carry
the AMPS.
