Hahahahaha! Now that's a sense of humor. Especially the GM/Hall&Oates tape...
...I had an 89 Chevy Blazer, whose favorite inexplicable failure was the oil
pan gasket. No matter what, and without fail, the oil pan gasket would decide
to burst like an over-filled water balloon, draining my oil all over the
street in a matter of seconds.
The kicker of the whole thing was, it happened only AFTER the warranty
had expired. Every time it happened, I would take it to the dealer, give him
a nasty look and say, "It happened again." I had mechanics from 6 different
shops tell me, independantly, that they couldn't figure it out, and that they
replaced the gasket, "the last one was probably just faulty."
As for your formula on cost versus quality, I think you're on the nose.
