I just had my '86 505GL's auto transmission rebuilt here locally in
Charlotte, NC. George, over at Sunset Coachmen, has an arrangement with
a local rebuilder (some guy that was supposedly a certified BMW mechanic
and knows these things). This person also uses the newer parts/kit which
basically is supposed to make these transmissions reliable, so one would
likely never have it go bad again. I'm sure George could explain it all
to someone. J.P. is George's main mechanic, and he's very very good with
these cars. J.P. is also a member of this list and posts messages once
in awhile, most recently with his 505 racing activities.
So, between a good mechanic to remove and put back my trans, coupled
with a rebuilder that indeed knows just what to do.......I think I made
out very well at just over $1,200.00 including tax and everything. That
price, by the way, also included a rearend drain and refill, as well as
the fitting of used trans linkages to the shifter mechanism (originals
had become too fragile from rust), and catalytic converter shield which
had been missing for some while. George has said that they've had
wonderful luck with this rebuilder and have complete confidence in his
work. So far, my transmission is working beautifully.....like new. I
hope I get many more years to come from it, and now hopefully I won't
have to worry about the innate design flaws since they've now been
rectified. In case you wanted to know, the transmission was the '86
505's original, and had 191,000 miles on it before it went bad.
The Sunset Coachmen phone number is (704) 392-8193, if you'd like to
talk to George with any of your transmission questions. Their website is
    at:

I know this sort of thing is best for locals like me, but perhaps others
could arrange to have the transmissions somehow either sent to George
for fixing, or even to his local rebuilder (if you're not located
locally). Perhaps shipping, in that case, would be prohibitive, but then
again, maybe not. One never knows. Besides, some people on this list
have no source for auto transmission rebuilds for their Peugeot, at
least someone they can trust. People are lately saying not very nice
things about their experiences with rebuilds from Ericsson Industries,
so maybe George's rebuilder could help others........just a thought.
