I just replaced the turbo on my 83 SAAB - 148,000 miles. (No oil cooler, no
watercooling of turbo bearings) I replaced it due to gradually decreasing
boost in spite of good injectors, wastegate, timing, etc. Replacement of the
oil supply and return, as recommended by the manufacturer, showed that there
was zero 'coking' present. I credit this to Mobil 1 since birth. btw
lack of boost was due to compressor turbine damage - it looked like someone
held sandpaper against the turbine.
