Well, I went and bought a strap wrench (normally used
to remove oil filters). Held the turbine with it (actually it's
a socket that goes on a 1/2 ratchet - got it at autozone)
and with a 3/8 wrench on the nut at the end of the shaft, I
was able to free it. Then, I had to use the backing plate to
push the impellor off the shaft (it was quite tight). The rest
went pretty fast. Cleaning took a while. I am in
the process of rebuilding it right now.

Let's see how it performs tomorrow...
