Is the turbo disapearing?

Just a question about the cars in europe:
Why are the 16 valves engines so popular now while the turbo are
rapidly disapearing? My search for performance parts has brought
me to hundreds of french sites, and I see that while in the 80s the
turbo was king at Peugeot, Renault and Fiat, it fell out of the
picture in the 90s. Even tuners dont go for it as often...

Turbo diesel is another story however.
Could it be insurance premiums and gas prices?
