compression check

As mentioned before, I purchased an 86 505 turbo with the zf4hp22 a few
months ago. I haven't tried to license it yet because I wanted to sort
some things out and get used to the car. It starts fine but seems to run
a bit irregularly. It has some valve noise. I changed the plugs last
week but began to think that perhaps I should compression check because
it has 155k miles on the engine.
My question is if one wants to know the general state of the engine,
what tests are useful (cutout or compression etc.)? Alternatively, I
could just try to get it licensed and see about water and oil
consumption, heating, etc. How do most of you approach this who buy
high-mileage cars (that lets Jim out)? Rulon.
